sap bleeding from yoshino cherry tree

Question
I just read a great answer about the gummy sap running from the bottom of a cherry tree, which could be peach borer, or something mechanical - I may have whipped it accidentally with my trimmer.
But, while the answer covered all the possibilities of cause, it did not recommend any action to take. is there one? or does this heal itself naturally?

Answer
When a tree like cherry is wounded it will bleed. The wound will heal by itself but needs to be protected from borer attack. The sap will attract the borer and the wounds should be sprayed with an insecticide called Merit. This will kill any insect the may attack and prevent then from entering the wound. Check with your local nursery for this product. I would also mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch (pine straw is good) not piled up on the trunk., This will keep down the weeds, and help hold moisture around the roots. Also it will keep the trimmer operator away from the tree trunk.
