Little Gem Magnolia problem

Question

Little Gem Magnolia Br
Hi, We just had a row of Little Gem Magnolia's planted this spring. In the past couple of weeks we have noticed this "growth" on some of the branches (see picture). Can you tell me what it is and how to get rid of it?  We live in Birmingham, AL.  Thanks in advance for any help.  Jeri Corbitt

Answer
Jeri:
These are a type of insects called wax scale. We see them also on holly bushes. If you have just a few, you can snip off the affected branches and destroy. If you have a lot, there are several insecticide options. Check in with your local garden center or nursery for some advise. One suggestion is BAYER ADVANCED GARDEN- TREE AND SHRUB INSECT CONTROL. This one contains Imidachloprid.  It comes in a blue plastic bottle, mixed w/water and is applied to the soil under the plant.  Be sure to read directions on the container label. It isn't cheap!

Keep in mind that scale insects often DO NOT fall off the plant when they die, so you will have to look for new ones forming. It takes a while for the product to be taken up into the tree by the roots.

Thanks for your question. I've been to the botanical gardens there in B'ham. I even applied for a job there- back in the dark ages!!

Steve
