Brinjal virus

Question
Dear Sir,
My brinjal plot had a serious attack of virus.Pathological observations also not confirming virus steain.  Please suggest any control measure for said virus.

Thanks and regards.

Answer
Dear Sanket, I believe brinjal is eggplant, and I think the virus you are talking about is tobacco mosaic virus.  Unfortunately, there is no cure for viruses.  The best that can be done is to try to reduce the infection.  For the most part, the virus will not kill the plants, but it will stunt the growth and reduce the amount of fruit you get from each plant, and the fruit will not be as attractive as it normally would be.  It will still be edible, so you might want to try and harvest any brinjal that you can.  Any infected seedlings should probably be destroyed, and for the mature plants, make sure you have any insects under control because they can help spread the virus.  Be extra careful to wash hands and equipment when working with the plants, especially when working with the sick plants and going over to the healthy plants.  Be sure not to smoke around the plants, and hopefully there is no nearby plot of tobacco.  I wish there were a better answer for you, and that there would be some chemical you could use to spray on the plants and make them healthy again, but sadly this is not the case.  Tobacco mosaic virus is very widespread throughout the world and it infects many plants.  Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.  I wish you the best of luck.  Melissa
