deer and shrubs

Question
Hello Dan.  I recently planted some small austrian pine trees and spruce trees on my property. There all quite small, less then 2 ft high.

To reduce the deer damage on the above trees, I plan on spraying them with a deer repellent this winter.  Would you also cover these type trees with a netting or a tree bag for extra protection during the winter months?

Thanks for your assistance.

Regards,  Bob Misenti

Answer
Hi Bob,

I make deer deterrents for large areas.

They could save you a lot of time and expense.

If you just have a few, you could put rings of 6 foot high mesh fence wire around them and remove it as they mature.  I've done that with remote apple/pear orchards for wildlife.  The rings are 4 foot diameter, and actually can probably stay permanently. You might want to put a grass / weed barrier around the tree under the fence ring.
