Mountain Lions on property

Question
I have horses that go ballistic every time a mountain lion uses my 3-acre property as a pass-through at night to get to the deer in the forest area behind me.  I live on the border of the Stanislaus National Forest in California.  This happens quite often during the fall/early winter months, and my horses have injured themselves in their panic.  What can I use, if anything, as a deterrent?

Answer
Hi Catherine,

I make a deterrent that might help with young cougar but you are describing a territorial adult, which this would likely not help. Your horses exaggerated reaction tells me they probably have been attacked in the past. Consider yourself lucky that they are both aware and still around. Multiple animals are the best defense, as cougar seek lone targets. You might check with your local wildlife department for advice. I don't have, or know of, a reliable a solution.
