fence work

Question
Hi Gary,
I am a new home owner. My property map shows that my land extends far beyond the fences surrounding my back yard. What I would like to do is move my fence out to the boundary of my property so that I can extend my back yard. I was wondering if I needed to get my neighbor's (and/or the state's)approval before doing this. Also, How exactly do I mark the exact boundary of my land? Your reply would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Rahan,

This is a good question.  Many communities have restrictions on how close you can place fences to a property line, some don't.  I would tell your neighbor what you want to do and contact your county or city offices and check into any ordinances would be applicable.  To mark the exacy boundary you will need to contact a surveyer and have them shoot the lines for you.  It will cost a little bit but is much better than having your fence on your neighbors property as it may become his.

Good luck
