Bumble Bees

Question
We moved into our present home this past December. This Spring was our
first here. There are 2-3 very large Bumble Bees hovering around our back
porch. They are there every day. I can't see a nest anywhere and I'd hate to
kill them with insect spray but they are becoming a nuisance. They are not
aggressive but their hovering spot is right next to our kitchen door and I'm
afraid they might follow us in. We have some cedar rafters on the patio porch
that will be used as arbors for some climbing plants. Maybe they're in love
with the cedar...I don't know. Any suggestions?

Answer
Mark, your best bet is a bee trap. These are cylindrical contraptions that bait the bees in with sugar water or honey. The bees get into the trap with no problem, but cannot get out unless released. If you want to take a humane approach, just take the trap away from the house and release them. Since there is no poison, they can live in the trap for several days. Any longer, they will eventually drown at the bottom of the trap.

You can purchase this product at almost any garden center or home improvement center. They are relatively inexpensive. I've attached a link with one example of a trap for your convenience.

I hope this helps. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Mike
