red larvae( ?) in grass

Question
While transplanting some flowers into a new garden, i dug up a huge mass (thousands) of tiny (1/2 the size of the head of a pin)dark red, round eggs. At least I think they are insect eggs. Any ideas? They were just under the grass about 1/2" deep. I saw no evidence of any insect with them. Sorry I don't have a picture. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Valerie,

I don't think these are related to insects. Except for an ant colony there are no insects that would produce this many eggs or larvae all in one spot. If you found no ants associated with this mass then I'd guess that it is not insect related. All I can suggest is to try and get a picture and I'll be glad to take a look.
