Root Vegetables; Pests

Question
sIn the roots of my garlic, tomatoes and all veggies there are these very small white pests about one mm or so long they are all over the roots in the soil and in the roots of my vegetables. Can you please tell me what this disease is or pest and how can i treat it. i leave in Melbourne Australia.

Answer
Your garden has most likely been infested with root maggots. The infested vegetables should be removed to prevent the maggots from laying eggs and multiplying. Diatomaceous earth, which is an organic control comprised of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae, is very effective against soft-bellied insects such as maggots and slugs. The abrasive composition of this product literally destroys the outer body of the pest, and will normally kill them off within a few days.

I have attached a link that will give you more information on maggots and other possible controls.

I hope this information proves beneficial. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Mike
