Cabages

Question
I live in Scotland and my new crop of cabages have developed a problem.
On the leaves they have a hole then a raise area around them - sort of like psoriasis in humans.
What is causing this?
How can I treat it?
Can I still eat the cabages ie cut off the effected areas and eat the rest?

Answer
Dear Shona Lee:

Re: Cabbages

The symptoms you describe is a fungus know as Alternaria blight.  It usually attacks lower leaves first.  Spots merge and leaves die as the disease progresses.  Plants eventually die.  Spray plants with a copper sulfide (also called Bluestone) solution at the first sign of symptoms.

Follow instructions on the copper sulfide product as it relates to the safety of consuming cabbages after treatment with this remedy.
