Asparagus

Question
I started growing Asparagus 2 years ago. I havent harvested any spears yet, but am anxiously looking forward to in 2009.  Should I cut down my existing Aspargus plants (Ferns) for the Winter or simply let them stand until Spring?

Answer
You could do either.  Their purpose is to feed the roots so next years spears will be healthy and larger.  I would also mulch them with about two inches of composted manure or compost, and four inches of alfalfa hay (crumbled up with your hands), or straw.

This will protect them from freezing, feed them all winter, and in the spring the asparagus will come up right through the mulch. At the end of the next season, pull back the mulch and add more manure, and cover them with the same mulch, or you can add new mulch if it has already broken down.
