in my lanwn without harming the grass
                regards john

Answer
Hi John in Ireland,

Dandelions are considered a cool-season broad-leaf type weed. With hot day temperatures, these weeds will vanish from the scene, leaving only their tiny seeds to sprout again when cool weather returns.

Dandelions and many other 'broad-leaf' type weeds are easily controlled by spraying them with a chemical called '2-4-D'.  Commercial formulas featuring this herbicide combined  with other chemicals (such as Dicamba) are many and are found at most lawn and garden centers. These chemicals will not harm grasses and have no effect on grassy-type weeds.

Herbicide chemicals can be sprayed to weeds and patches of weeds with an inexpensive home sprayer or the entire lawn
can be sprayed with a hose-end applicator.  There are also granular forms of herbicides you can spread to the lawn as you would fertilizers.

To keep all types of  weeds under optimum control PREVENT them from forming their seeds and seed-heads. You can do this by simply cutting them to the ground before the flowers can form. IF they make seeds, there will be more weeds next year to deal with.

Use a PRE-EMERGENT chemical regularly to prevent the weed seeds from ever sprouting.  This is the most efficient way to become weed-free. Pre-emergent chemicals are often combined with fertilizers as 'Weed-and-Feed' products.

With a good fertile-loamy well draining top-soil, best quality hybrid grass type(s), 1-3 inches of water per week, plenty of sun-light, ...almost anyone can have an excellent lawn with a minimum maintenance effort.
