Fungus errupting from soil

Question
I live in Las Vegas, NV and recently we have had a lot of rain. There is what appears to be a fungus that is is now in it's fruiting stage. It appears as bowles ranging from the size of small marbles to as large as a golf ball. They are sub-surface with only the ragged opening in their tops breaking ground.
In large numbers, they cause the soil to bulge up but can be found solitary also. They are grey in color with thick fleshy walls and an opening on the top. I describe them as "Boiling soil which was instantly frozen". They don't seem to kill the grass but live where it is bare.
My impression is that it is some sort of fungus and this is it's fruiting body.
Thank You

Answer
Hi Tom, dig down to the source of this fungus, and see if there is an old dead root or piece of wood of some kind.
Old burried wood, and old dead roots are great places for fungus to grow. That is usually where the toadstools in our yards come from.
I would dig out as much as possible. If you find a root or some other wood under there, remove it or saturate ot with fungicide.Remove it unless it is just too big to remove.
Saturating the soil with fungicide should kill mold spores in it. digging out as much as possible will make the fungicide work faster.
I use baking soda disolved in water as fungicide, because I only use organics, however, for a really bad infestation, I think I would buy some funginex, that, I think, it the best fungicide on the matket.
