Adding Lime-Timing

Question
We live in Upsate New York with a shady yard with numerous oaks.  Soil composition is fairly well drained with a gravel subsoil.  The amount of moss is increasing and have been advised that it may be due to too low a ph.  We have just fertilized 10-10-10 (to keep nitrogen down), overseeded with sun & shade grass mixtuire.

The question is how soon can granulated limestone be put on after newly overseeding and patch repair?

Answer
Typically, pH does not have much of an affect on moss either way.  Moss thrives on shaded, moist conditions typically.  Your moss problem is probably more directly related to shade and surface moisture problems than pH.  However, pH can affect how dense your turf is which can affect how well the moss grows.  So in a way, moss could be related to pH problems.

I am unaware of any harm that lime can do to seed germination.  In fact if the pH is too low lime may increase germination percentage.  The best guide is to take soil samples and have them sent in for a soil test.  In most state this can be done for free thourgh the extension service.  If not, the cost is very minimal.

Of course you may not want to wait for a soil sample to come back in since you have already seeded.  As such, I dont see any reason why applying the lime now would hurt anything.

The soil test will also tell you exactly how much lime you need to add.  Good luck and thanks for the question.
