Question -
Hi there!
Our lawn has been getting these brown spots and rapidly, our lawn seems to be dieing. Also, I went out today, and there are gopher mounds everywhere! Could the gophers underneath our grass be also causing these dead spots?
thanks for any help!
Kathy

Hi Kathy;
It could be the gophers. those lil buggers eat the roots of grass and plants.
To chase them away, sprinkle quite a bit of cayenne pepper down all the holes you can find, and any new ones that come up. In short time they will give up and leave. It irritates their noses.
It could also be broan patch fungus. for that, disolve baking soda in water and spray the area till it is thoroughly drenched. i use 1/4th cup baking soda per gallon of water.
Hope this helps you.

Answer
Hi;
Well, I have never had gophers, but you should be able to put the pepper down there once. Even watering and rain should not upset that too much. From what i am told, the gophers don't sticj around after that first application. they might dig new holes, that is whay i said put it in any new ones you see.
I shpuld think a teaspoonful or tablespoonful shopukld be enough. that much in my nostrils would sure chase me away.LOl
For the brown patch, saturate the areas, and if you still see a problem in a week, saturate it again. that should really do it. Actually the first one should kill out the fungus, but it may be already spreading so you would see new spots start.
It will then take a little time for the grass to grow and fill in the dead areas, but the soil should be ok if you want to put in some sod plugs.
The ceyenne pepper repels any animals that breathe through their noses.
If you get squirrels in your attic, put a trail of ceyenne around the perimeter of the attic, right where they would come in under the eaves. Once a year should be plenty, because it doesn't get washed out by rain etc.
Put some of those chili seeds you get in the spice dept, that you put on pizza etc, in your bird feeders. The birds will ignore it and go ahead and eat their seeds. they may even eat those seeds, because the hot doesn't bother them but it will keep squirrels out of the bird feeders.
