burmuda grass

Question
I have two dogs. Will their urinating on it kill my new burmuda sod ? What can be done to prevent this ?

Answer
Rose, I'd say you have one doggone problem.

We have always had dogs in our house - but they were banned from the garden. Too much digging, too much hunting, too reckless and, as you have noted, they can burn the heck
out of anything growing back there.

Often, it's not a matter of Nature Calling.  Sometimes it's the calling card they want to leave to tell everyone Fido Was Here.

Believe it or not, this problem is being studied by scientists.

And so far we know that some grasses are better than others for dog abuse.

Experts at Seedland, my favorite grass seed supplier, advise us: "In general grasses that spread by either rhizomes and/or stolons are the best choices as they tend to repair more easily."  Some of the better, more recent Bermuda Grass strains are named as being perfect for your situation.  Any idea what strain you sodded with?

Remember, even the best grass on the market will not be dog-proof.  Urea is a strong chemical that will do some damage no matter what you do.

But even the best performers unfortunately are not going to be damage-free.  Dog urine is highly acidic and damage is going to occur no matter what you grow there. If you must let your dogs out back, consider following them around with a hose and diluating the spot right after a dog has pee'd with a few seconds of water from the hose. In theory, at least, this would convert the waste into high Nitrogen fertilizer that's good for the grass.

Some people resort to dog kennels.  But that sort of defeats the purpose of a lawn, doesn't it?

Rest assured, they are working on this problem.  We Americans can't be without our best friends.  It's just one of those things that we don't have down perfectly yet.  In the meantime, water diligently and do the best you can.
