buffalo grass

Question
I have buffalo grass for my lawn and would like a program of fertilizing/weed control for year round.  I live in mid-western kansas.  Do you have any good ideas of when to apply fertilizer and weed control and what to use?  Any info helps.  Thanks Landon

Answer
Hi Landon;
What I use for fertilizer and weed control is sugar, applied at the rate of 1 pound per 245 sq.ft. of lawn and garden.
Sugar doesn't kill weeds. what it does, it nourishes the beneficial microbes that enrich the soil. Weeds like poor soil, so when they soil is rich, weeds will not thrive and die out as soon as they come up, if they even come up at all.
After I put the sugar down in the spring, and again that fall, it took about the third year before the weeds stopped coming up. They would come up, but die out afete a couple of mowings. It was either the third or fourth year that they didn't even show their evil little heads.
Baking soda is the best fungicide I have found. I disolve about 1/4the cup per gallon of water.
A;fa;fa meal and lava sand are both good additives that are packed full of nutrients, and of course make a compost pile. Put all the vegetable and fruit peels, coffes grounds, tea leaves, and egg shells in the compost pile. You can even put some newspaper in it. Don't use pages that have some color pictures ( the colored ink is toxic to plants) and don't use the shiny inserts.
If yu have a place in yor yard where you have some poor soil, you can make your compost pile there, and till it into that soil every couple of months, or even more, and it will turn that bad soil into lovely topsoil.
Put only well rotted ( composted ) manures into the compost ile or bin, as fress dropped has too many paasites etc in it, and it will infect your soil when yopu top dress with compost.
Tell you where you can go.
I beacme one of Howard Garrett's ground crew. That means I paid my dues, I think it was 25 dollars for a year. i get a monthly magazine in the mail, and an online magazine and newsletter in my email, and have access to watch his video library and access to the foruma.You can read solutions and remedies there and post queations.
