clay lawn

Question
Hi Charlotte:
I am going to take your advice + try sugar!  Just a quick question...how many minutes of watering to "water" it in with a sprinkler?

Lynn

Answer
Hi Lynn;
Don't know.LOL
Here is the way I water.
I walk on my klawn, and notice how it feels.
It feels like walking on a wood floor, or a floor with a thin outdoor carpet on.
I use a soaker hose. No matter what you use to water, the principle is the same. Water till it starts to run off, then turn off the water for an hour or so to leat it soak in well, then turn it back on agaion. Keep doing this until it is wet down to at least 6 inches.
I have St; augustine grass, and when it is watered deeply enough, it is like walking on a thick, deep carpet. Your foot gives. you don't sink in mud, but it gives and springs a little.
You can also get a rain gouge, put it where it will get the water from the sprinkler, and I am told that 1 inch on the gouge equals 6 inches of watering.
A lot depends on whether you turn off and on to let it soak in, or it waters constantly and a lot is running down the driveway and/or street.
There are also moisture meters you can buy, and stick it in the ground 6 inched deep, and water until the tip registers wet.
