Bermuda Grass turning black

Question
This morning we woke up to areas in the lawn that look like soot has been poured on them.  We live in Alabama and have bermuda grass.  Help!!

Answer
Not a nice way to wake up, certainly.  When you kick or swipe the grass, does it release a black cloud into the air?
This sounds like black sooty mold, a fungus growing on the sugary droppings from aphids or ants.  Treating the aphids or ants will cease the sugar substance from appearing on the leaves.  But the mold will be there until new growth replaces it.
Protect the existing growth.  Mow frequently.  Call an extension agent in turf or horticulture for proper pesticide application.  A fungicide will do little once you have the mold.  Treat the bermuda normally and do not overwater.
