clover as alternative to grass for backyard lawn

Question
Hi,

I received a response to my question but want to follow up about clover.  Unfortunately, Bob is "overquestioned" and unavailable now.

I am in New York (Long Island) and have thatch problems, bare spots and a dog that needs to go out in the backyard (leaving yellow/brown spots.

Please tell me your feelings about a 100% white clover lawn, as I have been feeling that this is the way to go.

Answer
Wendy:

My answer will pertain to North Carolina weather.  It has been along time since I was in New England.

White clover is a nice plant, low growing, low maintenance.  The disadvantages are that it will die back in hot summer weather and not cover completely.  Your summer temperatures are fairly high and this plant will respond by going dormant.  Winter temps also effect it.

This may not be a major concern for you if your lawn is failing.  I would mix some grass with it.  Actually, seeding white clover will fill in some spots between the grass plants.  Just scarify or aerate the surface and sew.

Best wishes.
