Answer
Could you be talking about GRUBS, my friend?

CHINCHBUGS are common St Augustine foes and rank as the most destructive pest in St Augustine Grass.  But their appetites are for Grass sap.  Not roots.

ARMYWORMS dine on the blades of your Grass.  Their merciless munching can devour an entire Lawn in less than a week.  But they have no interest in the Roots.

SOD WEBWORMS target Roots, but they also attack stems and Grass blades.  If you observe only root damage, you have a different problem.

MOLE CRICKETS eat Grass roots here and there.  But most of their menu is built around smaller in the Soil.

GRUBS on the other hand are wild about roots.  One recently identified non-native species delights in moving to shrub  and tree roots once Grass is gone.  Grubs afflict Lawns North and South, tall and short.  Hungry little larvae hatch out of eggs laid by some bad Beetles.  Their damage can be so light you don't even know they're there.  Or it can be devastating.

In your case, it sounds like the Grub population is out of control.  This happens typically because the natural Grub predators have been killd off by chemicals.

A pro-Earth internet company called Gardens Alive! specializes in progressive new ways to control plant diseases and problems without using the traditional dangerous insecticides and other chemicals that we hate.  For Grubs, they pose several offerings.  Probably their 'Grub Patch Lawn Repair Kit' will be what youa re looking for:  'Our beneficial nematodes kill grubs in their soil habitat by infesting them as parasites. They work quickly to kill the grubs before they can do any more damage to your lawn- faster than other commercial nematode products or synthetic chemical treatments.'  The package includes a Grass Seed to fill in bare areas.  Their Gardener抯 Gold Mulch increases Grass seed germination rate by maintaining moisture on the soil surface and keeping the grass seed in place.'  You can find it at their website:

This problem didn't develop overnight, Joan.  And I have to warn you, it will not be solved overnight.  But it can be done.  Follow the instructions carefully -- Nematodes like the ones they are selling you up here are delicate creatures, easily spooked and even more easily wiped out.  In a few months, re-apply; this will reinforce the system you put in place.

Good luck.  Keep me posted and if you have some other questions, let me know.  Thanks for writing.
