soaker hoses

Question
we live in dallas texas and have had extremely hot weather this summer with little rain, i have been told that soaker hoses 6" from the house can eliminate foundation problems and help your yard look better. we live over a natural well/spring, would this fact eliminate the need for soaker hoses?

Answer
Hello Michelle,
Sorry for the delay but here is what I do. I live in Sicily where the temperature is also usually well above (or at least around) 100 deg just about everyday, and I don't know much about what it would do as far as foundation problems but I use soaker hoses right up against my house, and I have one of the best yards around. I'm not on any kind of regiment for watering I just turn it on in the evenings and in the mornings, sometimes I forget to shut it off and it will be on all day or all night, depending, and I haven't seen anything but good things happen.
As for the foundation,Ill tell you that I have seen people that do not water their yards at all and there is a giant gap, sometimes three or four inches where their house meets their yard or where the side walk or drive way.I could see that causing issues later when it does rain. I've read somewhere that watered soil expands and dry soil shrinks so I think there is some truth to that,I have no gap whatsoever anywhere.
I also don't think that the natural well/spring would negate the need for soaker hoses. I'm assuming that they are way down in the earth and are do not have any effect on the surface.
I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, Ill be here!
