Tilling new yard

Question
I have just acquired a .75 acre of land for my new front yard.  The problem is the land is a big field that is covered with 3'weeds and is extremely bumpy.  Is tilling the land the right thing to do to make it a pretty front yard?

Answer
Tilling will simply mix it all up.  The trick is to smooth things out, and get rid of the weeds.

First, I would bring in a special mower and cut all those weeds down to the ground.  You can usually rent one at a nearby rental place.  Here's a link to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

Most of them will die as a result of the harsh cutting. Clear out the debris and have some good topsoil brought in and spread out evenly.  That'll smooth out the yard.  Then seed the soil and water daily.

Good luck!
