Mushrooms growing on carpet in house

Question
I was wondering if you could tell me anything on mushrooms growing inside a house in the carpet? I have just noticed mushrooms growing by my backyard wall in the carpet (it is disgusting!). It does flood my basement in the backyard!

Answer
Creepy, yes, the inside Mushroom farm will freak out the most diligent homeowner.  You've guessed I think at the culprit: Basement flooding from the back of the house.

Remove the carpet.  Not only Mushrooms, but Mold and Fungi are active in there.  Unless you can thoroughly dry it out and sterilize the rug to get rid of spores and germs, you ought to have it rolled up and discarded asap.  That will remove the growing medium those Shrooms are using as home base.
