Prostrate Spurge

Question
Hello,
I live in the Austin area and have Bermuda TIF 419 grass in my lawn.  During the recent drought, I was reluctant to use much water and now I have a terrible problem with prostrate spurge.  These things are amazing: they grow their little carpets right out of cracks in the sidewalk!  But more to the point, how can I control these little monsters along with the persistent nut sedge?  I am trying for something organic.

Answer
I have no experience in the use of organic products for weed control. The most practical way to do this is to use a wiper and an undiluted glyphosate concentrate. The product must be labeled for this application; it is usually colored to enable tracking. The wiper is essentially a sponge which has been soaked in the concentrate and allowed to 'drip' dry to the point where the product no longer drips. The weeds are 'wiped' with the concentrate and they die a slow death. If you have got a steady hand you can use an automobile windscreen cleaner like they have at some gas stations (sponge back-to-back with a rubber blade). Dip the sponge part in the concentrate and let the excess drip out. Go over the lawn and wipe the leaves of the weeds. The color will show you where the chemical has touched. A small paint roller may also work. Place the wiper in a suitable container to prevent it from dripping all over the lawn as you walk.
