Loose Lawn

Question
Hi Kenneth.  We live in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan and we are experiencing some interesting/annoying conditions with our lawn.  While my wife was repairing spots of dog damaged lawn, she began to notice that the lawn seemed very weak and pulled up very easy (almost as if lifting up a blanket).  This condition is throughout the lawn not just by the spots.  It is as if the green lawn we see on top is just laying on a layer of intertwining dead weedy stuff which is not embedded in the soil. The lawn is thick, does show some yellowing, with the main concern that it can be lifted up like a blanket (no real roots) Any idea what this may be and suggestions on how to tackle it?

Answer
Sounds very much like you have grubs. Try to dig into the soil and scout for c-shaped white maggots. You can buy grub insecticides at garden centers. apply according to directions on bag. You may have to reseed / resod after treating for grubs as the grass will likely die.
