something in my lawn

Question
Today my kids came to me to have me look at something growing in our lawn. It looked like a broken egg was not. When I dug it out of the ground the roots almost looked like a brain. It had clear slime all on it and what looked like a yolk. The funny thing is that my husband mowed the lawn yesterday and it was not there. I tried to look it up but can find nothing. What do you think it is?

Answer
As far as I can find out it is a type of slime mold. Check out this site:

http://images.google.com/search?q=slime+mold&biw=1920&bih=866&sei= MKCuTuuFOsybtweKx5jiDg&tbm=isch

Maybe you will be able to identify the one that you found in your lawn.
Also, the following site gives some information about the slime molds.
Hopefully, this has answered your questions and set your mind at ease.
