Floritam in December

Question
What are your thoughts regarding having Floritam sod laid in December? Do I need to wait till spring or will it thrive if its put down now. Being professionally done. I live in North Port, FL and lawn gets full sun all day. Thank you.

Answer
I would not recommend it if you want a nice lawn in a short time. In such a case you might choose to put down rye seed and wait until February to do the permanent sodding.
St. Augustine grass naturally tends to go dormant as the weather gets colder. Sod will not grow and "root in" well. Browning occurs and the instinctive reaction is to irrigate more. This will not help. It can be very disappointing. One has gone to great expense to put in a new lawn, t'is the season to be merry and the lawn looks horrible.
I use Valentine's Day as the start date for lawn work. As the temperature gets up to 70 degrees round the clock the sod will respond to your care program and you will feel a greater sense of accomplishment.

         Merry Christmas.
