catch basin

Question
I have a catch basin located about 4 feet away from property line in my back yard. It looks ugly and I would like to disguise it somehow. It has sharp slopes around it which effects about 12 feet of my back yard in total. I am thinking about building a deck over it. Do you have any other ideas? Thank you

Answer
You can plant around it and that will cost way less than a deck. Large grasses or evergreens that tolerate "wet feet" are good selections.
Also I have seen a lot of people paint them green or tan, place boulders around them, etc. Just be sure you don't limit the water from getting in or someone might hold you responsible if it causes a back up and floods.
A deck may or may no be allowable. Check your local regulations. If they are allowed I am sure it is only as long as you build at your risk....meaning if the storm sewer has to be repaired they can rip out the deck without warning or repair. All storm sewers are generally in an easement that belongs to the City or the neighborhood for maintaining the utility. Typically they range from 10' to 20' wide easements. Check you plat at local tax office or public works dept. to be sure.

Good Luck
