Rubber Walking Paths.

Question
I was at Tallulah Gorge State Park in GA. I was very impressd with the paths through the park. It seemed to be made of shredded tires mixed with some sort of apoxy. Curves and inclines seemed to have posed no problem. I cannot find any store in Jacksonville, FL area that sells the bonding mixture. Have you heard of this before. If so, how would I go about getting it? Is it easy to work with?   Thanks, Marc!   Eddie

Answer
Since the 80's, there has been a ground swell of interest in re-using discarded materials like old tires.  So much so, that there are now whole societies that link together and promote the use of adaptively re-used stuff.

We have used recycled rubberized surfaces under play structures or as a mulch substitute (perma-mulch.com), but I have not personally used it for trail material.  I have read about mixing ground rubber with asphalt for a better wear on city streets.  We typically use a plant-based polymer on dirt that binds in all together chemically, to create a hard surface for paths and access roads that still looks natural.

You might try the following California Waste Management resources links listing about 50 manufacturers, to see if these national suppliers have any outlets in your area of Florida:

Unfortunately, the backyard gardener is usually the last to get access to some of these creatively re-used materials, as the scale just isn't cost-effective for the producer.  Hope you find what you are looking for...
