We have a patio and the stones...

Question
We have a patio and the stones are slowly disintegrating. I like the way this looks but we might have to sell the house one of these days and I want it to look less like it's falling apart than it being planned this way. I vaguely remember seeing this kind of thing in a magazine and the owners had grown some sort of plant (moss?) on the stones that made them look really nice. Could you suggest something I could do, please? There is a roof over this patio so it does not get full, just filtered light.
Thank you very much.

Answer
You are right to look at moss for this partially shady location.  Each region has a different selection, so check out your local garden shop. Also consider Creeping Thyme, which releases a wonderful aroma when walked on.

Using yogurt or buttermilk on exiting stones actually promotes moss growth in some climates.  (Not so here in the arid west).  When I lived in Virginia, this was a common practice to "age" brickwork more quickly.

Sounds like you just want to fill in the gaps, however.  Some other low gap-fillers might also be Silver Edged Thyme or Corsican Mint.  Surprisingly, a good source for finding low groundcovers is the outdoor model railroad enthusiast.  Check out this site for other ideas (though I do NOT endorse their products - I only share this link as a resource for creative ideas)
