suggestions for plants to hide air conditioners and pool equipment

We are landscaping after having a pool built.  We live in Columbia, SC.  We are trying to "hide" our air conditioner system and our pool equipment.  While we want to create a "blind" we still need to be able to easily walk in, around, and behind these plants to service the equipment.  We need something hardy, something that can take the heat, and something that is not too "stiff."  Any suggestions?  Height requirements would be about 3-4 ft.

I would use ornamental grasses.You would need to plant them a minimum of 3 feet away from your units so that they will have room to spread and you can get behind them.Here are some good ones to use with resources to help you choose the right ones.Then you can check at local nurseries and garden centers to see if they are available in your area or order online:
