Clearing beds of unwanted growth - grass and weeds

Question
Hi Ms Walker,

I would like to remove weeds and grass from a number of rather neglected beds. I am not much of a gardener and was looking for some effective techniques and perhaps some advice on tools to use.

The grass and weeds are quite firmly entrenched at the base of shrubs and bushes and I would like to get rid of them without clearing the beds entirely of the desired plants if possible. Is some kind of weed/grass killer an option?

Would appreciate any advice you may have to offer.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Ms Walker,

There are some selective herbicides out there such as Trimec, this is a commercial product and I am not sure if you can purchase the product without a pesticide license.
The best way to get rid of the weeds is to get them out by their roots, the old fashion way is sometime the best way.

Take care,

Bud
