NATURAL PRIVACY FENCE

Question
QUESTION: I HAVE A L SHAPE AREA I WANT TO BLOCK. ON ONE SIDE I HAVE 3 OAKLEAF HYDRANGA THEN A CORAL BARK MAPLE TO THE RIGHT ANGLE. I NEED SOMETHING THAT WILL STAY YEAR ROUND ON THE OTHER SIDE. I KNOW LEYLAND CYPRESS OR A ARBORVITAE WOULD SERVE THE PURPOSE WELL, BUT WANT SOMETHING THAT WILL BE MORE ENJOYABLE TO LOOK AT. (HOLLY,PINE,LAUREL I JUST DON'T KNOW)  AREA IS PARTIAL SUN.. THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE.

ANSWER: Depending on your USDA zone, I like the Japanese Laurel (aucuba japonica). Hearty down to zone 7B...

For something a bit more cold-hardy & part-sun location, I'd also consider these:
Japanese hollies (Ilex crenata 慡ky Pencil? plus amny others)
Yew (Taxus species)- 慔icksii?(very large @ 25'), 慔atfieldii?(at 15' or so), & 慒lushing?(up to 15 feet).
Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus harringtonia 慏uke Gardens?
Rosebay rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum)
Leatherleaf viburnum (Viburnum rhytidophyllum)
and the False Daphne (?), or in Japanese, Yuzuri-ha (Daphniphyllum macropodum) - doesn't have an accepted English common name, yet...

Any of these might fit the bill, again, depending on your USDA climate zone.  ~M

QUESTION: Thanks so much, I knew I forgot something. We are in zone 7 Long Island, New York.  Also the area left to plant is about 18 feet and my property is elevated so I only need 8-15 feet on that side of the L. Again just want something to compliment the coral bark maple and not just look like a wall of bushes. Thank you

Answer
The Aucuba is a pretty snazzy plant, and it can get up to 6 feet tall.  Here is a picture of one:   http://www.flickr.com/photos/6708/256017218/

It isn't just a "wall of green", but a variegated shrub with a yellowish hue.  The red of your coral maple and the yellow of the Aucuba would look good together.  Toss in the Hydrangea, it would look pretty good.

If it still doesn't seem like what you want, do a Google image search on each of the other plants I previously mentioned, to see if they come closer to what it is you are trying to achieve.
