polymer moisture granules growing vegetables

Question
Hi, I live in Atlanta, GA. I would like to know if it is safe to grow vegetables using polymer moisture granules mixed in with the soil. Does the plant absorb any of the chemicals?
Thanks ahead of time for your reply.
Michele

Answer
Michele, the plants will absorb the chemicals, which will leach into the soil.  I would not recommend placing them around your vegetables.

Instead, amend the soil with organic materials such as peat moss, dried grass clippings, shredded leaves, aged manure, and compost.  These will improve the tilth of the soil and gradually provide needed nutrients to the plants throughout the growing season.

Thanks for writing.

Mike
