cracked butternut squash

Question
I live in Portland, Oregon and am growing butternut squash for the first time.  I have a few large squash that have developed cracks in the rind - there is a clear, sticky substance in the cracks - none of my garden books address the problem - is it a pest or fungus, or could it have something to do with moisture stress (we have had some unusually hot dry weather).  Should I harvest the cracked ones now even though they aren't quite tan yet?

Answer
Cecil, when vegetables crack, it is almost always a sign of inconsistent watering.  This occurs naturally during hot summers when there are long dry periods and then sudden waves of rain.  ALthough it is most prevalent on softer vegetables such as tomatoes, it can occur on squash also.

I would go ahead and harvest the squash.  If they're not fully ripened, place them in a cool dry location until they turn a pale orange.  The taste should not be affected.

Regards,

Mike
