Question
what is my soil missing?  tomato plants grew quickly to probably 5 feet.  leaves spaced 3 to 5 inches between.  small leaves.  some fruit which mostly split on top.  is this a nutrient issue?

Dear Robin,
It sounds like a water issue to me.  Like maybe rain at not quite the right time.  I recommend though, as far as soil nutrition, this fall tilling the garden spot and adding chicken litter or manure.  It will make a great deal of difference next spring when you plant.
