Conditions for growing dill weed?

Question
QUESTION: When I try it, I get small, stingy plants.  What does it take to get the abundant kind one sees at the grocery store?

ANSWER: Dick:
Warm weather and regular watering should do it. There are a number of varieties of dill, and not all of them are tall, so it may just be the variety you are growing. Also, it should be planted from seed, not transplants.

QUESTION: Do you have any thoughts about the condition of the soil?  How about the use of soil conditioners and fertilizers?  Would dill weed do better in full sun or partial shade?  Do the plants grow up again after harvest, like chives do?

Answer
Dick:
Herbs are usually better off in less rich soil. As long as it has good drainage, it's probably OK - but if you are having trouble growing other crops in the same soil, that's a different story.

I believe dill will do OK in partial shade, but you will probably get more leafy growth in full sun. You can pick just the leaves without cutting the stem and maybe get a longer harvest - until it flowers. I don't think it would grow back, but you might get a few new leaves at the base if you after you cut it. It is a tender annual, so won't survive a frost. If you use it often, try sowing seeds every week or two.
