Tips for growing plants in a home garden

When you buy a house you want to have a wonderful garden where your kids can have fun and you too can relax on a holiday. This is because a garden allows us to be close to nature. A home garden is incomplete without potted plants and flowering plants. If you need to find inspiration on what kinds of plans will look good, take a tour of your neighborhood and observe what varieties of plants are being planted. That’ll give you an idea of what grows in your area.

It's a good idea to go to the local nursery or gardening supply shop and have a word with the clerks, since they can help you select the type of plants you will grow in your home garden. Flowering plants like roses are an all time favorite with everyone. To add a cheerful look to your garden, consider getting some sunflowers. Flowering houseplants, like Clivia or Kaffir Lily add vibrancy and a touch of the exotic. The most popular exotic house plant and garden favorite, Sambac, brings the most wonderful aroma into your home garden. If you want a plant that requires minimal care, the cactus is your best bet. It can grow in any weather and is easy to maintain.

If you are an avid gardener then consider growing your own vegetable patch. Grow tomatoes, broccoli, luscious rutabaga and green vegetables in your home garden. Greens and lettuce, cumin plant and mint can also be grown as an herbal patch in your garden. If you are living in an apartment then have a few pots on your window sill of mint, tulsi, bamboo, aloe vera and curry leaves. These herbs also have medicinal benefits.

The silk mimosa will prove to be a good tree for your garden if you're looking for something fragrant. This fast growing tree has attractive fragrance and its pink flowers add beauty to its fern like leaves that are shaped like a dome. You can also grow some bamboo. The Chinese believe that bamboo is a sacred plant that can attract wealth and prosperity to the grower. Who wouldn’t wish to have these?

A garden needs good soil and plenty of water for plants, flowers and trees to grow. Organic gardening is one of the safest and healthiest options out there. Proper care of the soil is essential to the success of an organic gardener. Soil is the main key to growth. Soil that contains sufficient manure will guarantee that your produce will be plentiful and thriving. The addition of too many chemicals to the soil causes it to lose fertility in the long run. Natural ways to tend soil is to allow some earthworms to be present in the soil. These worms while moving around, ‘till’ the soil that allows air to enter beneath and allow the soil to remain fertile. One way to keep both the soil and plants healthy is to use organic fertilizers. Adding dead leaves, grass and plant material will enhance the richness of the soil. This is called mulching. Cow dung would make a useful addition to your soil, as it contains many nutrients. The addition of manure to the soil is common practice in agriculture.

You should always water your garden evenly. You can use drip irrigation to do this efficiently. Nature balances itself beautifully. Through our gardens, we will be able to do our own part in protecting this planet.
