Container Tomatos

Question
How can I tell if I am watering too much?

Answer
Some things to know when you are watering plants:

Plants need oxygen around their roots, to keep from drowning. When the soil is always wet, and never allowed to dry out, the water replaces the oxygen. The roots eventually rot, and the plant dies. Good drainage, when talked about, in regard to soil, is really saying, the soil holds just enough moisture, and oxygen for the plant, and the rest of the moisture drains away.
Too little water creates pockets of dry soil. The plant is not getting moisture from these areas, so it is only living off of a few roots that are finding moisture.

The best way to water a plant:
Know how much the plant requires. (Ei: Tomatoes require
more moisture, and nutrients, then a Day Lily.) Test the soil with your finger. Gently dig down a few inches, to see if it is dry. If it is, water, until it comes out of the bottom, then test again. Keep adding water and testing, until you are sure the soil is wet. Then, let it dry again, and do the process again.
Watch the leaves. They will tell you a lot about what the plant needs.
