strawberries

Question
I live in Kansas and have some strawberries planted in plastic tubs. This is the first winter I've had them and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. There isn't much sunlight in my house. I've been told to cover them and leave them outside or leave them uncovered and put them in my garage or basement. Any suggestions? And do I water them during that time??? Please help!!

Answer
Hi Jamie, after the first couple of light frosts, and you notice the plants are somewhat dormant and are scaling back, mulch them over with hay or straw to protect them from a hard freeze, about 3-5 inches will keep the soil from freezing. In the Spring lift the mulch and check them periodically until you see new greenery forming, then lift it off for good. Thats about all there is to it, that is how the Professional growers up North do it. Nick
