Pre-emerge – Bluegrass

Q: Can I still put out a pre-emerge to control annual bluegrass in a bermudagrass lawn? If so what type?

A: I anticipate a big resurgence of lawn weeds this spring and summer due to the stress from the drought last year. But since annual bluegrass has already germinated, a pre-emergent will have no effect on it now. This is a fine time to begin your plans for summer weed control. The key is to apply a pre-emergent before a rain so the chemical is dissolved into the soil. I typically recommend only one application around March 1 but this year, due to the vagaries of weather I think you’d do better to apply in late February and again in late April
