Saw Palmetto – Control

Q: How can I kill unwanted palmetto plants here in Richmond Hill, outside of Savannah? We weedeat and bushwhack them, but they come right back in a few months. There must be a way to kill the small saplings.

A: Professionals use very concentrated and expensive herbicides that are not labeled for use by homeowners.

I think triclopyr (Brush B Gon) is probably the best herbicide available to homeowners to use, but it will have to be sprayed repeatedly. Generally, every four weeks in summer as new growth appears.

If you have a large area, Garlon + Accord (restricted use herbicides) work well.
