Browntop Millet – Temporary Lawn

Q: What do you think of planting browntop millet to hold the soil during summer before I plant fescue in fall?

A: Browntop millet will work fine. It germinates readily in the heat and will look passable if given a few waterings.

Plant at a rate of 2 – 4 lb. per 1000 square feet.

Mow regularly, to minimize seedheads.

Kill the millet with glyphosate a couple of weeks before planting fescue. Till it into the soil the week before planting and you’ll have a good seedbed for the fescue.
