Reel Mower – Choosing

Q: I just bought a new home on 1/3 acre and it is all new bermudagrass sod. I would rather use a high quality reel mower. Can you make a recommendation?

A: My main concern with using a reel mower is sharpening it. This will need to be done at least every year. I know if no local company that sharpens reel mower blades for homeowners. (If you find one, let me know.)

You can sharpen the blade yourself but it involves removing the blade assembly from the engine and hand-turning it backwards while applying automotive valve lapping paste to the blades.

Are you up to the challenge?

If not, buy a good quality rotary mower, sharpen the blade every six months and enjoy your lawn.

Update:

• S.E. reports: “We own a reel mower and have it sharpened at Peachtree Mower Company on Buford Highway. They do a great job for us.”
