Gunnera tinctoria

Chilean Prickly Rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria) Genus:  Gunnera

Enormous, puckered leaves of this tropical, prehistoric plant emerge in spring, reaching six feet across or more, creating a dramatic waterside or greenhouse specimen. In late spring, a robust stalk bearing brownish-bronze inflorescence adds to the exotic appeal. Evergreen in frost-free areas.

Care:

Prefers rich, damp, well-draining soil, and cooler temperatures. Remove dead or damaged leaves as required; use care to avoid spines. In cooler climates, move indoor before the threat of frost. Trim to the ground each winter to rejuvenate. Feed with a controlled release fertilizer.
