Northwest style: Artful plot

Drawing on her study of painting, Valerie Murray designed this tranquil planting in her Victoria, British Columbia, garden. The centerpiece of her composition is a piece of vintage American art pottery that she bought at an auction. To echo the pot's butter yellow hue, she planted Hosta 'Frances Williams', with broad, blond-edged leaves, and Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'), with arching yellow-and-chartreuse leaves. The solid green leaves of Hosta 'August Moon' (above left) pick up the chartreuse in the adjacent grass. A granite birdbath provides a rough-hewn contrast to the smooth pot. The planting is edged in front with a curve of beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis).
