Goldenrain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata)

• Deciduous
• Zones 2-21, 28-41
• Full sun
• Moderate to little water
• Growth rate: slow to moderate

To 30 to 40 feet high and wide, with an open branching pattern that provides slight shade. The leaves are up to 15 inches long, divided into 7 to 15 oval leaflets. Leaves emerge purplish in spring, turn bright green by summer. Very showy, fragrant yellow flower clusters appear in early to midsummer; these are followed by lanternlike fruits that mature from red to buff or brown. Goldenrain tree is not particular about soil and will perform well even in hot, windy regions. Give young trees regular water; established specimens tolerate considerable drought.
