Growing Lathyrus vernus (Spring Vetchling)

Pronunciation: lath'-ih-rus 

Grown for its showy pea-like flowers, Lathyrus vernus is native across Europe to Turkey and Siberia. The flowers are followed by flattish pods that twist open when dry, releasing the seeds. A clump-former, it works well in rock gardens or perennial borders.

Light/Watering: Grow in full sun to partial shade. Provide partial shade in Zones 8–9 to protect from summer heat.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Grow in humus-rich, fertile, but well-drained soil.

Pests/Diseases: Generally without problems, but new growth may be discovered by rabbits or slugs.

Companions: Striking in spring with Daffodils or the leaves of Iris pallida 'Variegata.'
