Designing an Herb Garden for Your Yard

Once you have set out to create an herb garden you must decide on the design of it. There are numerous types of herbs that are great additions to any garden so it’s important to take your time and make sure you select the right varieties for your growing region and your own needs. The majority of common herbs will grow pretty abundantly as long as they have sun. Once you have decided which herbs to grow you can focus on designing an herb garden to best accommodate each of the plants and yourself.

Your design can incorporate different types of herbs that are featured in sections of your garden. One area can be the Italian herb garden and another area could feature several medicinal herbs. Have fun creating your herb garden design.

Things To Consider In Your Herb Garden Design

First you need to choose a location for your herb garden. You can design an herb garden inside or outside. You can plant your herbs in the ground or in containers on your patio. Sometimes containers can have the added benefit of keeping the herbs in control by preventing their spread. An indoor herb garden is easy and you do not have to walk back and forth to an outdoor garden every time you need some fresh herbs. If you design your herb garden outside the one thing you might want to be cautious about is access to water. Lugging a watering can back and forth can get tiring.

If you have chosen several different types of seeds which you want to plant in your herb garden be aware of the amount of maintenance you are creating for yourself. The larger your garden is and the more different types of herbs you add to it you will have to spend extra time keeping the garden maintained. Herbs can grow quickly and before you know it your herb garden could be out of control and looking a mess.

If you are creating a large garden make sure the design for your herb garden incorporates some walking paths through it. You need to make sure your design will allow you to maintain the entire garden once the plants become taller and mature. Walking paths help to create access to hard to reach areas more centrally located in your garden.

Several books are available for purchase that can cover many of the design aspects of an herb garden. For inspiration consider paging through one at the bookstore.
